May 10th at The Royal and Ancient Akebar
What a contrast from December! The warm and sunny weather brought out all the traditional aspects of summer and fortunately the dress code at Akebar is somewhat relaxed. Therefore, flip-flops, Bermuda shorts, garish T-shirts and pasty white legs were all on view as we teed off at about 1.00pm.
Some participants had to be woken up before they could get going, such were the effects of the morning sun and 15 cans of Carlsberg.
Cook and Jones, being fit enough not to need the Dodgems,( sorry, buggies,) set the standard with blistering drives down the 1st and the match got underway.
The scoring was high and the pressure was on but no-one crumpled and despite the continuing intake of alcohol, the final result was very tight as were several of the players!
Best individual scores were Patch and Dale ( I know, I can't believe it either) with 38 points each. However, this is a pairs competition, and, partners having been drawn the results were as follows:-
Winners Trev (34) and Dale(38) 72 points
2nd Teeny(36) and Gedye(35) 71 points
3rd joint Rich(29) and Nathan(31) 60 points
Stocky(28) and Ashley(32) 60 points
5th joint Wil(20) and Patch(38) 58 points
Henson(27) and Baggers(31) 58 points
7th Azz (27) times 2 54 points
Thanks to Stocky for organising the event and to Baggers for working out the scores. Baggers also won closest to the pin on the last hole and pocketed £13 for this display of class!! and did he buy us a drink?????
December 2007
It was a cold and frosty morning as competitors gathered on the first tee at Akebar. Spirits were high, though, as Patch got the tournament underway with a delicate 7 iron to within at least a 100 yards of the green. The following tee shots were not a lot better and several players tried to use the ice on the pond to gain a bit of extra yardage.
Handicaps were all over the place and the combination of a few hangovers and atrocious play meant that several players did not take the game as seriously as they should. I'm sure using a hockey stick is against the rules of the R&A. ( not that it did you any good, Stocky - last place was it?)
Anyway, despite the freezing conditions and it being pitch black at 1.30 in the afternoon, the points scoring was reasonably good, especially as many of the greens were as rough as Bob's tongue on a Sunday morning.
In 3rd place with 61 points Bielby and Teeny
In 2nd place with 73 points Bob and Steve
And in first place with 77 points Richard Jones and Matt Hodgson. Well done chaps!
Top individual score, with 42 points, was Dan Hodgson - well played, Dan!
Booby prize goes to Stocky with a barrel-scraping 14 points - better luck next time!
Thanks go to Stocky (14 points was it?) and Baggers(30 points) for organising the event.
